Martin Luther King Jr.

The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) is perhaps the most honored African-American figure in United States history. After earning his doctorate in divinity at Boston Univrsity during the 1950s, Dr. King became moved to fight the injustices which plagued African-Americans in the United States of America.

Inspired by Gandhi, Dr. King advocated a peaceful, nonviolent form of resistance, exemplified by the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 and the 1963 March on Washington. Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, but his successes in the struggle for equality and brotherhood earned him the hatred of many. He was assassinated in 1968. Nonetheless, his memory, and his famous dream of a world where no one is judged on the basis of skin color, lives on.
